While there are methods of accomplishing some of this. Early in the process you simple can't beat actually going to people's websites that relate to yours. Joining in conversations on blogs and forums, and generally being an asset to the talks going on. Using a connection check these guys out back to your own site where possible and your name.
I do my best instead of getting them to bend to what I may want to meet their needs and expectations. I know it's not my day but theirs. I let them tell me exactly what they want. Then I do my best to exceed their expectations.
